Prepare for the Great ӰƬ Shakeout on Oct. 17 at 10:17 a.m.

On Thursday, Oct. 17 at 10:17 a.m, ӰƬns will come together for the Great ӰƬ ShakeOut, an annual statewide earthquake drill aimed at preparing ӰƬns for real earthquake events. Earthquakes are a part of life in ӰƬ, with the state experiencing more seismic activity than any other in the U.S. The Great ӰƬ ShakeOut serves as a critical reminder to review and practice what to do when one occurs. Whether you're a lifelong ӰƬn or new to the state, it's vital to know how to respond effectively and safely during an earthquake. Learn more about how to participate in the ShakeOut.

Ocean glider opens new 'tool kit' in crab tracking efforts

A remotely piloted underwater glider is showing promise as a tool to track crabs in the Bering Sea, where their numbers have plummeted. The ӰƬ Department of Fish and Game and the University of ӰƬ Fairbanks have tested the glider Shackleton for the past three years to locate tagged crabs.Read more about its use in tracking projects.

Winter just around the corner

Cold and storms are inevitable in the Interior, so take stock of everything now that you might need in the case of an electrical outage. Extra batteries, blankets, and wood for your stove, or maybe you are equipped with a generator. Using a generator for backup power is common in ӰƬ, and unfortunately so is carbon monoxide poisoning from the exhaust. Read more on safe generator use in the winter.
