Register today for Week of the Arctic events
Staff and faculty interested in attending in Fairbanks and in Anchorage are invited and encouraged to register in advance. This will help to ensure accurate counts for coffee breaks and staffing for venues. There are more than 40 events throughout the week in Anchorage and Fairbanks.

The Week of the Arctic coincides with the Arctic Council ministerial meeting in Fairbanks May 11 at the Carlson Center. Although the ministerial meeting is closed to the public there will be livestream watch parties in Fairbanks and Anchorage. There are two key opportunities for the university and the public to participate in the Week of the Arctic; descriptions of a few events are included below.

International Arctic Assembly — Tuesday, May 9
The International Arctic Assembly will cover the outcomes of the Arctic Science Ministerial, the implementation of the International Arctic Research Policy Committee's five-year plan, planning, development and risk mitigation, as well as a discussion on how governments — tribal, municipal, state, federal and international — integrate science and indigenous knowledge in management decisions and more.

Arctic Showcase — Wednesday, May 10
Speakers will present projects delivered during the U.S. chairmanship, with ³ÉÈËӰƬ leaders interpreting the implications for and importance to the state. The showcase will be moderated by ³ÉÈËӰƬ Arctic Council Host Committee members Brian Rogers and Karen Perdue, and Craig Fleener, senior advisor on Arctic policy for the State of ³ÉÈËӰƬ.
Arctic Highlights forum — Wednesday, May 10
Speakers will present updates on activities that occurred between 2015 and 2017 related to but separate from official Arctic Council efforts. ³ÉÈËӰƬ leaders will act as moderators, interpreting the implications for and importance to the state. .

The "I am Inuit" will take place in the UAF Art Gallery May 9-10. The Inuit Circumpolar Council ³ÉÈËӰƬ began "I am Inuit" to raise general public awareness of the Arctic. Inuit are indigenous peoples with a shared language and culture who inhabit the Arctic regions of Greenland, Canada, ³ÉÈËӰƬ and far-east Chukotka. In ³ÉÈËӰƬ, Inuit include the Inupiat, Yup'ik, Cup'ik and St. Lawrence Island Yupik.

The exhibit is a collaboration between ICC ³ÉÈËӰƬ and the Anchorage Museum, with assistance from the ³ÉÈËӰƬ Humanities Forum.

Volunteer opportunities
|
Volunteer to help welcome our visitors to campus and to help our events to run smoothly and professionally for Week of the Arctic events on the Fairbanks campus May 8-12. Anyone volunteering for three or more time slots during the week will receive free public event registration and event apparel, available exclusively to Arctic Interchange staff and volunteers!
