Staffing changes at Disability Services

There are staffing changes at the Office of Disability Services. Mary Matthews has left her position as director, and Ana Richards, the ADA coordinator for UAF, will work with ³ÉÈËӰƬ who need accommodations until a permanent replacement is found. A competitive recruitment for the director position will be underway shortly. $1.7 million grant to train informal science educators

UAF will receive $1.7 million from the National Science Foundation to train informal science educators, such as librarians, museum staff, and after-school providers, through the Fostering STEAM project.

Small mountain glaciers play a big role in recharging vital aquifers and in keeping rivers flowing during the winter, according to a new study published in Geophysical Research Letters, a journal of the American Geophysical Union.

Memorial service to be held for Jerah Chadwick, professor emeritus

A gathering in honor of Jerah Chadwick will be held Sunday, July 30, at 7 p.m. at the Georgeson Garden pavilion. Chadwick, who died June 7, 2016, in San Antonio, Texas, was named a UAF professor emeritus of general and developmental studies in 2009.

Agriculture Appreciation Day at the Farm Aug. 3

The Matanuska Experiment Farm in Palmer will host ³ÉÈËӰƬ Agriculture Appreciation Day at the Farm from noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 3. The free annual event has the atmosphere of a country fair with educational presentations, hayrides, animals, and a number of kids’ and family activities.

UAF's Golden Days parade float wins award

UAF's float in this year's Kinross Fort Knox Golden Days Grande Parade received the best noncommercial award Saturday, July 22. The float's centennial theme was 100 Years of Friends in Gold Places.

UAF research center introduces new wildfire map tool

People interested in the latest wildfire activity now have a new web-based tool to explore current and historic wildfires in ³ÉÈËӰƬ. The UAF Scenarios Network for ³ÉÈËӰƬ and Arctic Planning has launched a new ³ÉÈËӰƬ Wildfires tool. Users can view active and inactive fire locations and perimeters, and explore past wildfires dating back to 1940.

Unmanned aircraft go beyond line of sight

A UAF team and a Canadian company have flown an unmanned aircraft beyond the line of sight for the first time as part of efforts to bring such aircraft to northern airports.
